The Banking Cowboy and I went to see Willie Nelson with Asleep at the Wheel Saturday night. It was a *fabulous* show. Made better because it was just us, a hotel, and the town I went to college in. The campus is about 4 times bigger than it used to be which was surprising.
We ate at my favorite places, I had more falafel in two days than I've had in 5 years. He's planning on going back to school for his Masters in Accounting possibly at my old school, so it was nice to show him around a bit.

Fannish stuff:

I like Dollhouse. I realize a lot of people don't. I realize a lot of people hate it. I understand people are morally and mortally offended by the constant mind raping and physical raping of the characters. To which I have to say, did you read the premise? From the first whispers about it over a year ago, we all knew it was about a group of operatives, mostly female, whose minds are wiped clean and filled with new personalities each episode. What did you expect?

I like Eliza Dushku. I'm probably extremely biased because she's on the short list of women I'm *reallyreallyreally* attracted to. I admit I just like seeing her on my tv and therefore my baseline enjoyment is higher than most. But, I *did* stop watching True Calling because I didn't like the show. I think she's doing a fine job and if there's anyone who's really *not* settling into his/her role and selling it, it's the guy who's always wandering around with the bitchy in charge woman.

Yeah, I suck at names, sue me.

I'm not going to sit here and say Dollhouse is Joss's finest achievement or that he's progressing as a storyteller/character creator. Or doing any of the groundbreaking he's said in interviews this show was going to break. I call BS, but I've been calling BS on him since he said, "I created Buffy as an iconic character." I decided then and there that he wasn't a person I would like if I met him face to face.

He doesn't have to be.

ETA I'm specifically addressing the people who appear to be surprised, that this is what the show is about.

Surprising, or not so surprising, pairings I enjoy in fanfic.

SGA: I'm a complete and total sucker for Rodney McKay/Ronon Dex pairing. I'll read anything that focuses on the two of them. Shippy or gen.

Angel: Wesley/Lilah. I *love* them. One of my biggest issues with the mindwipe was removing that relationship from Wes's memories.

Buffy: Spike/Riley

Firefly: Jayne/Simon. Speaking of Firefly, TBC and I started watching it last night.

Friday Night Lights: Smash/Saracen

Smallville: Oliver/Chloe -- I blame ethrosdemon for that one

Gossip Girl: Dan/Blair

Veronica Mars: Weevil/Logan

Torchwood: Ianto/Owen

This is exactly what I expected - doesn't mean I'm not allowed to complain about it!

You're totally allowed to complain about it! But I've read some reactions from people that were SHOCKED that the operatives were wiped clean every week. There's a lot of outrage and ire out there that such a supposedly feminist TV dude would do a show like this and people are all offended and have their tail feathers in a twist and I'm all ... did you read the summary?

Oh I see. I didn't realise people were actually surprised - I've hated the concept since I first heard about it but I decided to watch anyway because it's Joss. Joss, who has a boner for some really skeevy scenarios as it turns out. :( But the second episode hooked me, so I imagine I will watch the entire series and just hope for it to stop slapping me in the face asap. :D!

I'm not surprised at how big his boner is for some really skeevy stuff, I'm STUNNED at how he's not at all afraid to put it out there for other people to see. Xander was supposed to be the self-insertion character on Buffy, but now I'm beginning to think it was more like *Warren* was the self-insert.

I really liked episode 2, except for one small detail, they weren't wearing helmets while they were rafting. You just don't do that.

The creepiness has been there since the summary annoucement. Bitching about it is one thing. Acting like oh my lands how can Joss do this just has me rolling my eyes.

But then, you know me. I'm a misogynistic, cynical, pessimistic, bitter fandom woman-hater. Or something.

I liked episode two a lot better than one, and I have hopes I'll enjoy the rest, as well. I actually don't have a problem with the whole tone of the show. Partially because that is absolutely one of my kinks, and also because that is the whole point. We aren't missing it. We just haven't seen all of it, yet. I kinda like that.

People actually write smash/saracen? WHERE?

I've read more but that's the only one I've saved.

Huh, I wasn't aware you were any of those things, and I think I know you pretty damn well ;-) I think we've been reading some of the same people. I have to remind myself that people sometimes just need something to get up in arms about and TV is easier to get upset about because it's not ACTUALLY as upsetting as stuff in the real world.

Episode 2 was worlds better than episode 1. I laughed out loud a couple of times

Yeah. I have been noticing this more and my tolerance for it is... less than what it used to be. I'm starting to actually call people on it, which gets me a mixed bag of reactions, most of them not so good. I don't even care anymore. It's fucking stupid. If you have reasons to go whole-hog into internet insanity, well, I can't really complain (and there's one person on my flist, in a different show, for who that applies; she needs an outlet to be unhappy about since she's Stiff Upper Lipping life, and you can't really say anything to that, you know?). But most people? Don't. They just don't, no matter how they rationalize it.

I keep waiting for Joss to insert the funny. I miss Joss' witty turn of phrase and how he could slide through some really depressing events with a laugh.

I keep waiting for the funny too, but clearly this is not one of Joss's quip-tastic endeavors.

I laughed so hard I had to stop and calm down on this line:

I've got four older brothers, none of them are Democrats

but I did spend about two hours in a gun store this weekend with my very Republican boyfriend.

Yeah, my impression was that the premise was skeevy for a Reason, and that Eliza begins to Fight the skeeviness eventually. Sometimes I think people who are horrified to find shows about sexist themes don't understand that sometimes they are trying to subvert them. Of course, I'm not sure to what extent Joss is really trying to do that, but people who are Shocked are silly.

I keep thinking of you and S, cuz there are a bunch of Smart women discussing FNL on Slate.com.

YAY for Willie Nelson, away-time, and you+TBC!

Yes, those who are SHOCKED are silly, that's what I trying to say, albeit rather clumsily. I'm no longer used to this blogging thing.

::whistles::

I love my football show. I'm afraid it's over and I'm trying not to mourn and just be happy it had a beautiful ending.

Re: the Dollhouse stuff...thank you. Just thank you. I've been trying not to scream at people for days.

You're welcome. I've stopped myself from screaming but I couldn't NOT say anything any longer. It's not that people are hating it that bothers me, it's how SHOCKED and SURPRISED they are that the show is based on something so inherently skeevy.

I am also enjoying Dollhouse. It is somewhat skeevy and creepy, but I was kind of expecting that, given that, oh, I read about the premise ahead of time! I actually find the underlying questions it's asking about who we are, and what we want rather intriguing. Episode two was also kind of action packed and fun, with a few twists I did not expect, so that was cool. Clearly some people don't like it and that's fine, but I'm glad I'm not the only one who feels otherwise.

Keeping my fingers crossed it's around for a bit.

Isn't it neat how reading the summary ahead of time can prepare you for what's ahead?

I've only seen I think two people say they were watching it and only one liked it as much as I do so I felt like something needed to be said and hoped that other people who enjoyed it would say so! Thank you for speaking up.

I'm keeping mine crossed too, but I'll be super surprised if it makes it more than 13 episodes.

I am a total Jayne/Simon slut.

Spike/Riley ... there's just not enough Riley fic, period, and yes to that pairing.

I've read some good Xander/Riley fic, but on the whole Riley fic tends to be Riley-bashing-fic and that's no fun at all.

I missed last week's ep of Dollhouse, I'm mostly unspoiled but a lot of people seem up in arms about it, but from the reactions I've gleaned it doesn't seem to be anything I didn't expect from the inception. We'll see.

I loved Wesley/Lilah so much and I agree about the mind wipe taking that away. That upset me.

We've known for a long time that Joss is fascinated with mindwipes. Now he's got an entire show devoted to them, there's a lot of room there for nasty skeevy creepiness -- but I expect it to be that way. Maybe some people aren't?

It was the most upsetting thing about all the Angel/Buffy mindwipes IMO.

Huh. Honestly I was so preoccupied with getting to watch Eliza that I pretty much blocked the plot. Although, now that I've been watching (btw episode two has hooked me completely) I really missed the whole sexist thing. I guess I'm not looking for it. I suppose if I broke it down the show would be morally aborhent, I guess it's either cynical or naive that I don't care, I want to be entertained and I am.

Or maybe I'm just not that deep. Yep, I like that one :)

I'm really enjoying Dollhouse so far. I liked episode two a whole lot more than one and I definitely plan on sticking this out as long as Fox allows it to exist. Also, the rafting made me think of you and Sally which made me happy (and I did notice the lack of helmets too).

I don't find it terribly surprising that there are people out there who are SHOCKED by what the show is doing ('cause it is fandom and what would fandom be without people overreacting to things that they knew full well were going to happen) but I still don't understand it.

I guess my constant surprise at other people's over the top outrage is just as ridiculous as the over the top outrage.

;-)

I also don't think Eliza is doing the terrible, flat, one note, no range, same character performance that so many other people are commenting on. But I do admit that I'm a fan so I'd probably NOT want to see her do a bad job. I like the show, and will stick with it as long as Fox airs it. Now, if I had to choose between Dollhouse and Sarah Connor, I'd take Sarah Connor and not even hesitate. But we don't ever have to make choices like that [thank god] so I'll just sit back and enjoy as long as they let me.
