Christine resigns herself to having to request Pepper’s employee badge photo from Stark Industries, fighting their (understandably less-than-forthcoming) H.R. department for a picture that will end up looking more than a little bit like a mug shot. Which, under the circumstances, is a tasteless bit of irony that Christine could do without, regardless of her editor's opinion to the contrary.

Dark and what I believe realistic look at the characters pre-series. By the time Serena and her guy (ugh.) sit next to the other two, Georgina is already snorting up two lines. Two more lines, cut perfectly, stare up at Serena. It’s kinda hard to see them, the white powder on the white coffee table, but Serena knows they are there, she knew they would be even before she sat down.

Serena grabs the rolled up hundred-dollar bill—‘cause it’s always a hundred—from Georgie’s fingers. Within two seconds, she is feeling the sting. And it’s not like the first time; it never is. That first time when Georgie told her it would be the best rush she ever felt, better than any orgasm, and fuck was she right. That first time in the cramped washroom stall with impatient club-goers banging on the door, and Svetlana squeezing her throat slightly as she ran her tongue along Savannah’s jaw before handing her the hundred to use as a straw.

No, it’s not like that. But it’s getting the job done, and Serena is so caught up in it she doesn’t notice the hands fumbling along her body or the lips scraping along the column of her neck, rushing to her mouth. She just lets herself get caught up in all the sensations, lets it wash over her skin.

A mixture of tingles and rough strokes replace her thoughts. It’s nice; there’s a distinct, familiar pleasure in losing herself in movements—the movements of his fingers; their tongues; her blood.

But tonight there is something else. The pleasure is there, kind of, and then gone as fast. She’s left empty (maybe emptier?). She can feel his hand slide under the hem of her skirt and dart at an awkward angle under the elastic of her underwear. And fingertips brush in a way that makes her moan, but not because of the reasons it should. She moans, Serena realizes, because she has become aware of what she is doing, of what she is expecting to happen. She is moaning into his mouth because it is an integral piece of pretending to be Savannah the innocent southern girl who gets fucked by strange men.

If you haven't read this and you like Castiel you're missing a fabulous treat.

His brother considers it a weakness, which is perhaps the primary reason that Castiel does not expect this cycle to end well for Sam. At last, Dean sighs. “You told me how to save Sam from Lilith. I—I appreciate that.”

Castiel shifts his weight, coming half a step closer. “Is that all that you feel for me?”

And Dean’s earlier shock is a faded echo of his stunned expression now, as if Castiel has knocked his world flat and built it up into a completely new configuration.

Castiel is going to have to do the hard work here. It is not work to which he is accustomed, but he has an idea of what is necessary. “I would like very much to know that you … return my regard.”

She doesn’t sound like herself as she says, “Humphrey, remind me that Brooklyn is shittier than I feel right now.” Kind of shaky and unsure, and even though he’s getting sick of the borough, he knows Brooklyn is definitely in better shape than she is right now.

Dan starts talking about the used bookstore he went to, and this poem by Larry Levis he found that he can’t get out of his head. He somehow stops himself from quoting his favorite line.

He only gets off the phone with her when she says they’re pulling up outside her father’s house. After hearing the thanks, which seemed like it held a hint of a smile, the line goes dead. He realizes, later on, that in his desire for human interaction, he’d never even asked why she was calling him.

The first thing they make him do in the Ostroff Center is write down, in his own words and handwriting, exactly what happened. What he did, what he said and felt. Everything. The further he gets from the Event, his therapist—“Call me Rebecca,” she says, looking him straight in the eye—tells him, the less clearly he’ll remember it.

Eric gets as far as It was a dark and stormy night before he runs out of steam.

Instead he makes a bulleted list. Went to the bathroom. Turned on the shower. Sat down in the shower. Cut lengthwise down the wrist. Waited.

His therapist reads it in silence before looking up at him. “This is good, Eric,” she says gently, “but we’re really interested your feelings.”

He doesn’t know how to say that he’s not sure he has any.

When Eric turned thirteen, he spent the night curled in an unforgiving hospital chair while they pumped Serena’s stomach and hooked her up to an IV. Their mom was there, kind of, pacing in and out of the waiting room, on the phone with their dad, speaking in hushed tones or getting watery burned coffee from the mess.

They weren’t alone. There were other pinched, desperate-looking families glancng up hopefully whenever someone passed through. He remembers thinking that this was where you waited around for people to die. Another mother sat directly across from him with a son, a little boy asleep in one of those wrap-around papoose carriers. She never looked up when someone came in, just scratched into a Times crossword with heavy bags under her eyes.

Rebecca nods when he relates this story but doesn’t write anything down. “Do you think about her a lot?”
