Happy birthday [livejournal.com profile] cityphonelines!!!!

Calling all iphone users.

Tell me, what apps can you not live without? Does the iphone need a battery management app like the droid does? Anything you can think of that you *use*.

Hit me.

Also: how do you change the slide to open to a password?

Thank you!!!!

ANGRY BIRDS. It's a required part of your iPhone experience.

*deep breath*

Weather: i like weatherbug the best

sports: sportacular. I keep trying other things and coming back to this one. It has the easiest interface and least crap

games: word warp, spider free, bubble shooter free, angry birds

Finding things: aroundme, imdb, find friends

Food: Epicruious, Check Please (I cannot figure out tip), All Recipes

Music: Soundhound, pandora, public radio

Media: ibooks, netflix

Utilities: LED Light, Battery Magic, PageOnce (finances)

Location/Driving: MapQuest (free turn by turn directions), AAA

App stuff: WallpapersHD, AppShopper, AppMiner

Those are the basics of what i use frequently. I have more, I've had a *lot* more, but these are the mainstays. Almost all are free or have a free version.

THANK YOU!!

*exactly* what I was looking for. You are genius! I've already got a few of those. Battery magic is something I need.

Do you know about the password/slidey thing? I *bought* what I thought was the right app yesterday and it turned out to be a toy. ::head desk::

Also, uninstaller?

I have no idea with the password thing, I thought that was native to the phone. Gimme a bit and I'll play around with it.

Uninstalling is easy. Press and hold the icon for about three seconds. All your icons will start to shake. When they're in this state you can move them around, arranging all your screens, and those that can be deleted will have a black X in their upper left corner. Press it, and the app is gone.

You can also delete apps through the settings menu

Settings->General->Usage

This will show you a list of what you have by size. I find that really useful. Selecting any of the apps in this menu brings up a screen with a large "delete App" button. They work the same, it's whatever you prefer.

Let me get back to you on the password screen.

Ah, okay.

For the password thing:

Settings->General->Passcode Lock

Turn it on and it'll ask you for the key-code you'd like. That's the internal one. I'll look around and see what the best apps are for a passlock. I know there are a bazillion.

K, short answer is there is no longer a way to do the slide-a-pattern to turn on the phone. it's only the number combination.

Unless you want to jailbreak, which I do not recommend.

Slide is awesome, but numbers are too. I don't have a whole lot of nosey people in my life, but there are enough ;-)

Thank you!!! I'm still playing and learning, it's rather fun.

I honestly don't have that turned on for my phone. I probably should but eh. Too lazy.

Feel free to ask more questions, etc. There are a lot of iphone users out there and this is just my interp of what should be around. Sadly, looking for things like "best iphone apps" or "best iphone utilities/games/music/etc" will give you a lot of options. I used to not want to pay for any of my apps. I've relented on that some, but I still like freebies first. I'm picky as hell and I don't want to pay for something I won't use.

AppMiner and AppShopper will let you know when things are on sale, etc. That's a good way to keep an eye out for things you like but won't buy at full price.

Yeah, ladycat gave me a list in her comments awhile back that was like yours that I used to go trolling, also a reddit thread, but the reality is that playing with my settings and the LJ app are the main things I've done so far *g*.

I've also found it helpful to sit down with friends who've had them for awhile and find out their tricks... none of which I can remember now, of course /o\.

Beta-ing this morning :D!

I'm the only person I know that I'm that kind of friends with LOCALLY who has one.

I have a sad.

I hope my fic didn't give you a sad. I meant to tell you you don't have to use google docs if you don't want to, it's just what i use when i write at work

Heh. Grant, Ron, and I all had ours out on the table at brunch the other day comparing settings and stuff... mostly because Jason wasn't there to tell us to get our devices off the table :D.

No, I love your fic! Your Diane at the beginning, especially, is SO spot on. And I keep researching things like how to make partner and judge and you're all good. I only feel bad about the google docs because I'm kludging the "track changes" thing and it might make more work for you. But almost done! :D.

I've had my iphone for a bit now, but I haven't done much with it. However, this is a list of apps that I use on a regular basis.

Messengers: AIM, Windows Live Messenger.

Social Networking: Facebook, Livejournal, Google Talk, Google +, Twitter, Tumblr, foursquare.

Entertainment: Netflix, Words with Friends, Pinterest, PostSecret, Angry Birds, Hanging with Friends, Pandora!!!

Calendar (comes with phone, but I sync with my google calendar), iBooks (must have, and epub is the best format to use for reading on your phone).

That's all I can really think of at the moment, but if I come up with more, I'll let you know.

And I figured out how to do the passcode thing, but for some reason, my phone still requires me to do the slide across to unlock my main screen, then do a passcode to get into my phone. It's weird.

My latest app addition - Vlingo (allows talk to text and talk to e-mail).

Pandora, Public Radio, Home Radio (Canadian stations)
Vogue Knitting (you probably don't need that, but I use it constantly)
IMDb
ESPN ScoreCenter, Yahoo! Fantasy 11 (for fantasy football)
iP (period tracker - I have the paid version, but the free one is fine too)
banking apps for my banks
Lose It! (which I use to journal food off and on when I feel I'm eating too much junk)
7 Words (a word game) and the free version of Quarters (as in the drinking game, yes)
iBooks, OverDrive (for dlding books from library), Merriam-Webster dictionary

And my new favorite -- TurboScan. This lets you scan documents to PDF by taking photos. It's fucking amazing. I scanned 7 or 8 knitting patterns yesterday from Vogue Knitting at the library. Usually I just put the magazine on the scanner/copier there and e-mail to myself. But this I was able to do while working the circ desk and the quality is amazing. So if you ever have scanning needs (see a recipe in a mag while waiting at the dentist for example), this does the trick.

Oh and I meant to say that I don't use a battery management app. I haven't felt the need for one. But I keep my phone plugged in at work, so YMMV.

I think ladycat took care of your password lock issue, yes?

Date: 2011-12-04 06:45 pm (UTC)
From: [identity profile] turnonmyheels.livejournal.com
Yes, she did. I haven't noticed a battery issue yet, with my old Droid I had an app that turned off apps running in the background to save the battery. So far, it doesn't appear necessary with the iphone.

Yeah, on the iPhone they just kind of sit "inactive" if they're open. Exceptions would be facebook and twitter apps if you're a super heavy user maybe. But you aren't. Bluetooth will drain your battery, so if you don't use a Bluetooth device, turn the feature off in Settings. And I keep WiFi turned off unless i'm actually using it (at home or somewhere else). And then screen brightness; I keep mine fairly low (I figure I can always turn it up if I'm looking at something that's difficult to see).
