Cooking Time: 25 min
Level of Difficulty: Easy

Spicy sausage, red wine and fire-roasted tomatoes come together in this ragout-like sauce. Truly hearty and satisfying.

Ingredients

* 1/2 pound(s) raw turkey sausage, Italian-style, casings removed
* 2 tsp olive oil, extra-virgin
* 2 medium yellow pepper(s), cut into 2-inch long thin strips
* 1 medium onion(s), thinly sliced
* 1/2 cup(s) red wine
* 1 1/2 tbsp minced garlic
* 28 oz canned crushed tomatoes, fire-roasted recommended
* 1/2 tsp crushed red pepper flakes, or less to taste
* 1/4 tsp table salt
* 8 oz uncooked whole-wheat pasta, fusilli
* 1/3 cup(s) basil, fresh, chopped

Instructions

* Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil.

* Meanwhile, to make sauce, in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat, cook sausage, stirring and breaking up meat with back of a wooden spoon, until cooked through, about 3 to 5 minutes; remove to a plate.

* Heat oil in same skillet. Add yellow peppers and onion; cook, stirring frequently, until vegetables are lightly colored and crisp-tender, about 5 minutes.

* Add wine and garlic; cook until most of liquid evaporates, about 1 minute. Add tomatoes, crushed red pepper, salt and browned sausage; bring to a boil. Reduce heat to medium-low, cover and simmer until vegetables are tender and sauce is heated through, about 10 minutes.

* While sauce simmers, add pasta to boiling water and cook according to package instructions. Drain pasta; return to pot. Add sauce and basil; toss to mix and coat. Yields about 1 1/3 cups per serving.

Notes

* The sauce is also good spooned over rice.

Toss in some fennel seeds for even greater flavor.

SALLY TOMORROW!!!!!

I got over myself and started using the chin up machine in the fitness center. Nothing like a few chin ups to make you ache all over.

Good for you. I still need to buy a bar. But I just replaced my laptop battery and now I need a new power cord, so it'll be another paycheck before I make room for that in the budget. Of course, this last week I've been a total slacker on my pushups, so chinups are a real joke right now anyway.

OMG Sal. SO SORE.

I've been neglecting strength training due to my issues with abandoning Magz. You were right, she could care less if I'm an hour later and I've been making up for it and paying for it this week.

OW FUCKING OW

What classes are you teaching while I'm there? I want to know if I want to do a class. :)

Spin. Friday afternoon spin. If you wanna go in early and do some strength we *so* can. I know you hate the spinning [it's my absolute *favorite* to teach].

Ah. I wasn't sure if you had a step class going on too. Yeah, I hate spinning. :) I'll bring my swimsuit.

Okay. For you, I will give it another try. How's that? Besides, that saves me digging my swimsuit out of my swiftwater gear bag.

Also, you could be kind of lazy. *g*

I'll get you set up before everyone else gets there and we'll make sure you don't fall off. Promise. I'm also going to put you on that chin up machine. Stoney is swearing by it too.

I freaking love chin up bars. But yeah - ouch.

I'm so glad you two get to see other tomorrow!

So. I can't do an actual pull all of B up above the bar chin up. But with this nifty machine that assists you, I can pull a percentage of me up. I started with 8 reps and I'm up to 10. When I hit twelve I'm going to add another set with a different grip. I have no idea when I'll change the weight so I'm lifting more of me, the point is to struggle and I'm struggling.

So!

I've really neglected strength training since I got Magz. I kept feeling bad for leaving her home alone so long and skipping my strength work out. I'm really paying for that right now.

OW!!

Well, we aren't built for actual chin ups, so it takes loads of work to get to where you can do it freestyle. I love that machine. I try and do three kinds of exercises on that one:

standard chin up, hands out at shoulder width, pull ups with my hands curled towards me and close together, and then dips. And then I need help getting my hair brushed from soreness. :D

*rubs yer muscles*

That's the niftiest machine I've ever been on.

I started with hands wide, palms away and can get 8 out with those last two being a definite struggle.

I added 2 palms turned toward face hands directly above shoulders yesterday. I couldn't get all the way up on that second one.

I'm not quite pulling 40% of my body weight. I started out with half my weight and got up twice and decided to back it off a bit *g*

That's awesome! The only machines I'm doing right now (because walking is taking up almost all of my workout time) are the OB/GYN machine, the one where you squeeze your thighs together, or spread them? I effin' LOVE that one, or the pull ups/chin up machine.

I've got it where I can do... *does the math* everything but 33% of my weight? My goal is to be able to have Linda Hamilton arms (from T2) so I'm really pushing it.

wow! go you! I too, have wanted Linda Hamilton T2 arms since I saw them but have only recently started working at it. Now, that I don't have so much fat covering my arms I'm a lot close than I used to be. My deltoids are pretty freaking awesome, it's my biceps and triceps that need the most defining.

excellent name for that machine! that's one that hasn't been in my routine in some time but is about to be added back in. I can do leg lifts and inner thigh lifts all freaking day, but that machine hits them much more effectively.
