I don't know about the rest of you, but I've been sampling this seasons crop of new shows pretty heavily. I've seen commercials somewhere about a crime show where one of the investigators is female and has an eidetic memory. Unfortunately, I can't remember the network, the show, or the star and have been unable to find it anywhere. Can someone help me with this?

Here's my sampling [so far] and the results

Network ABC
Show: Charlie's Angels
Result: I watched 1.75 episodes. JFC did anyone re-read the dialog after they wrote it? I realize the actors aren't exactly Oscar worthy but I think even Helen Mirren would have a difficult time delivering this dreck. Grade: F

Network Showtime:
Show: Homeland
Result: I'm really not at all interested in this type of show. The only post 9/11 tv I've ever really enjoyed was Rescue Me and I broke up with it season before last. Claire Danes does an excellent job, but I'm just not into it.

Network CW:
Show: Ringer
Result: I'm going to watch one more episode [I haven't caught this week yet] and if something doesn't jump out and grab me I'm done. I actually bitched about SMG's acting in this one the other day. When she was on Buffy she managed to create several entirely different characters: Pre-Angelus Buffy, Wish!Verse Buffy, Buffy!Bot, Faith-in-Buffy's body, post-Resurrection!Buffy, etc. I do not understand how she can't pull off twins. Not to mention the rest of it just isn't working for me either. I'm sad about this.

Show: The Secret Circle
Result: 4.25 episodes watched. I promised myself I would give it 6 episodes because that's what it took for Vampire Diaries to take over my life. I ... didn't make it. Gale Harold and young John Connor are not enough to make this interesting.

Show: Hart of Dixie
Result: I'm ... watching. Rachel Bilson is completely unbelievable as a surgeon. The poorly drawn Southern caricatures are annoying [though not True Blood level annoying] and the premise is completely ridiculous. And yet, I watch. I also thought [for about 12 seconds] about asking Stoney if I could re-cap it, but I'm just not ready for that kind of committment to anything. If I was, I'd have asked to recap SoA or TVD and that's just not happening

Show: Nikita
Result: 1.5 episodes. I'm just not interested. Again. And I wish I was.

Network NBC
Show: Prime Suspsect
Result: I'm watching. I *love* Maria Bello and have for years. Its got Kozik from SoA, Charlie from Fringe/Alvarez from Oz, Aidan Quinn among others. I wish it was less stereotypical but it's watchable.

Network CBS:
Show: Person of Interest
Result: It's too much of a post 9/11 show for me. I did like seeing Karen from DirtySexyMoney in the first episode and may have stayed with it if she'd been a regular.

Show: Two Broke Girls
Result: This is why, other than The Big Bang Theory I don't watch sitcoms.

Network FX
Show: American Horror
Result: I've only watched the Pilot so far. I'm not certain how long a show like that can last. Not to mention I have absolutely ZERO trust that anything Ryan Murphy is involved in is watchable after 2 seasons.

I'm looking forward to checking out Once Upon a Time on ABC when it comes out, it's being advertised heavily in my comic books.

What I'm watching though not necessarily the day it airs:
NFL Football
Strike Back -- it's a post 9/11 show, but it's British so it's different. and JFC the dudes are hot. They gave us the one American man performing oral sex on a woman until she was very *very* satisfied. No show ever gives us that. He left the sexual encounter without having reached his own orgasm and he was so happy he made her come, it didn't even matter. Plus, I think he'd rather shoot people with his blue-eyed, blond, built like a brick shit house boyfriend.
Lost Girl
The Good Wife -- A+ for the season already
Dancing With The Stars -- I always pull for Derek and Max. Looks like Derek has a much better chance of winning than Max this year
Hart of Dixie
Sons of Anarchy
America's Next Top Model
American Horror Story
The Vampire Dairies
Big Bang Theory
Fringe
and at least one more Ringer
Luther is currently airing on BBCA, but I've already watched it.

I've been confused about SMG's acting in the Ringer, as well. One thing I have never, ever critiqued with SMG is her acting ability. Some of her choices, etc, sure, but the ability to create whole characters distinct from anyone else's regardless of the writing -- never had that problem.

Now? Big problem. I can't figure out either twin, they're far too similar without any of the little clues that I've been expecting with this sort of noir drama and an actress of, what I thought, was her calibre. Now... I have no idea. It's one of the reasons I think I'm struggling with the show. She's just blank. There's nothing warm or vaguely comfortable about Brigitte, and the iciness of Shioban isn't enough. Sad. I really want to like the show.

It really makes *me* wonder if what I thought was SMG's stellar acting was a case of good writing and my own blindness at how awesome Buffy was.

One shouldn't become *worse* at their craft as they progress, ya know?

It takes me back to the last 2 seasons of Buffy and how I thought it was the writing or the subject matter or the shipwars. I never blamed my lack of enjoyment toward -- Buffy the character -- as having to do with the actress, but after watching Ringer I'm not so certain. She's got that post Grave sadness/blank eyed stare and not really anything else going on.

Hunh. That is really interesting. And it feels right -- there are too many similarities to SMG's current acting style and Buffy's withdrawal in s6-7. It could be more of the lingering burn out, as Sarah clearly was by the end of the show. I sometimes wonder if she really wanted to come back for season 6 at all. Maybe not a conscious thing, I have no idea, but I think you're right: the drastic shift in the character was less the writing and more Sarah wanting out of there.

If it is a case of burn out, then maybe her skills did get worse. Or hell, maybe she just wasn't that good of an actress. She was a soap opera diva before and without the melodrama or the tight writing to assist...

I feel dirty saying that. But she's a blond bit of nothing on my screen. Hell, even the crappy best-friend's-husband (who played Billy on Angel, btw) is doing a better job of creating a character and I would never qualify him as good at anything.

The photo as you walk in the door to their apartment is a classic post!grave Buffy expression. Dead eyes. Pinched expression. It's painful to see.

I feel dirty thinking/saying it. Like I'm betraying the holy fangirl grail or something, but she's either lost the skills she once had or I was tricked into believing she had them in the first place.

She is an executive producer on the show, maybe she's trying to do too much? I'm actually more disappointed in Fringe than I was in Dollhouse and that's saying A LOT.

The guy playing the love interest was on Angel? I loved him on the CW show Life Unexpected but that show went downhill fast. I don't like him nearly as much on this one as I did that one.

I got the impression that the photo was meant to be painful, but yeah. She's washed out to the point of being nothing, and as an actress that's not a very good place to be.

"Unforgettable" is the eidetic memory one, I think. It's on Tuesday nights.

I'm sort of torn on the Secret Circle. I was mainly interested in watching it because of the supposed Ethan/Charles bromance, but 4 eps in, and they've hardly had scenes together. And otherwise Gale Harold doesn't seem to have chemistry with anyone. *sigh*

that's it!!!! I don't know why I was having such a hard time finding it. I'm going to check it out when I have a chance.

I had to give it up. If it suddenly gets good I may give it another chance. I've got enough "teen-age" tv to watch so I don't mind giving it up.

It feels WAY more like a teen show than TVD. The teens really act like teens. I think on TVD they aged up the kids to college age in terms of behavior so that the cross-gen stuff wouldn't be as creepy.

I find the adults more interesting on TSC, but that plot is moving glacially.

I was more into the parents too on that show. But it's SO SLOW. I can't stand things that move that slowly. hence my favorite shows are TVD and SoA

If so, I had no idea. Even if I drop the show I'll probably read the recaps, I tend to read the one I don't watch

I'm so glad I'm not the only one enjoying & loving Strike Back. That show is a whole boatload of implausible action & drama, but (as you say) everyone is hot as hell & the two leads (and the female lead, for that matter) are so gloriously fucked up & dysfunctional & codependent on each other that I would want a million more episodes.

Must upload my Strike Back icons...

I LOVE the Colonel. rawr she is a million kinds of hot. And incredibly Slytherin in her testing of Damien. It's an awesome show, it makes me want to go back and find season 1 and watch it.

The Colonel is MEGA hot, dear Lord. And I love hot IT chick, too.

Season 1 is totally different - it's all about John Porter & his partner & is more a paranoid/Bravo Two Zero kind of atmosphere than the straight shoot-em-up action, crazy guys in crazy situations thing that Season 2 is. But you should definitely DL it because Richard Armitage is hot as fuck in S1. *g* (Oh, and Andrew Lincoln, who's now in The Walking Dead, is also in S1, so that's another reason to watch.)

I've been dlding Strike Back but haven't watched yet. I have up on Secret Circle 15 minutes into ep 2. I just don't care. Ringer is boring me to tears. I'm a few weeks behind because I have no motivation to watch aside from a couple of actors. But the story just hasn't caught my attention at all. Blah.

"Unforgettable" is the show you want. It's in "The Good Wife"'s old time slot (Tues, 10 EST, CBS). I haven't watched yet, figured I'd wait until there are several, download, and then overdose. That's my usual MO with procedurals. Right now I'm letting Criminal Minds accumulate on the DVR.

I think you'll really enjoy Strike Back, I'm looking forward to re-watching the whole thing in a marathon.

I've heard Ringer turns around this week. We'll see, I'm still upset that they killed off the only character I had any emotional tie to.

Unforgettable is definitely it. I don't know why I couldn't find it before

Thanks for the minireviews! You watched most of the shows I've been considering, and have now saved me lots and lots of time.

Right now, I'm only watching Community. How sad is that?

Well, opinions vary and all that, but I like to think that other than having a few tropes I'll watch regardless that I have pretty decent taste in TV.

I'm debating going back and picking up the last season of Dexter but I quit part way through last season and I'm not feeling it.

The show about a female cop with an eidetic memory is Unforgettable, and it's on CBS at 10pm/9pm central.

I posted my watch schedule on my LJ too, it should be at the top.

I watched the first two episodes and liked it. I haven't seen the other eps yet, but I do have them on my computer to watch after midterms. I love the idea, and some of the guys are cute. I'm shallow enough to know that sometimes that's all it takes for me.

Also, I'm liking The Secret Circle...It was really corny at first, and kinda kiddish, but it seems to be getting a bit better now.

I've been disappointed in Ringer too. I think I had grand expectations for it and that's why I feel let down. I heard that this week is a game changer so we'll see. I probably won't get to it until next week.

American Horror Story is extremely fucked up. It's like a crazy twisted thing I can't quite figure out but I can't help being facsinated by it. It's creepy as hell.

I'm also kindof in love with Hart of Dixie. It just makes me smile. I love Rachel Bilson. I was bummed when Nancy Travis left but she's got that new gig with Tim Allen.

I can't see American Horror being any good at all aside from the freakshow aspect in about 3 more episodes. They've already taken the Dylan McDermott character and started turning him into a combination of Sean McNamara [nip/tuck] and Will Schuester [glee]. Ryan Murphy's issues are more annoying than Joss Whedon's

Hart of Dixie makes me smile albeit while I roll my eyes so hard they try to fall out of my head.

This.

They are trying so so SO hard to make Scott a heterosexual guy and it's coming off as transferrance and sublimation and so much so with the end of the last episode.

If you can't find S1 let me know and I'll see what I can do.

Was the brunette woman who passed the blonde Scott had been making out with the same brunette that was actually a soldier sent to spy on him for the Colonel? Surely it was.

I'm trying to get his motivation for not sleeping with the woman he saved and then macked on forever.

I'm going to save season 1 for hiatus

Date: 2011-10-14 11:57 pm (UTC)

Yes, she was sent to spy on Scott to see if he were psychologically stable/had any weaknesses.

I'm trying to get his motivation for not sleeping with the woman he saved and then macked on forever.

I can think of a few.

1) He can see himself falling deeply in love with her, and right now that's not the right thing in his life, and it's not fair for her. (He doesn't want to be Stonebridge.)

2) He can't be emotionally intimate with a woman and have sex with her. There are women you love, and then there are women you fuck. That is to say, he's divorced sex from love.

#2, of course, opens the doors to all sorts of slashy psycho-sexual possibilities, because what if he doesn't do the same thing with men? What all the women are nothing but a big long string of sublimation? Women are for sex, but men are for love? ;)
