Hmm, that's a good question, actually. I only read them sporadically, as I notice a series that appeals to me. And I don't know if it would be possible to go back and get every issue.
Astonishing X-Men is a good place to start. There is some basic stuff they talk about that would have been covered in earlier issues, but nothing that couldn't be picked up.
There's also the Legacy Virus series (I'm not sure if that's the actual name of the series, but that's what I call it).
The X-Men were also heavily featured in the Civil War series, though that was actually a crossover for the entire Marvel Universe.
There's also the House of M series, which would require research on Magneto and his family, but is very interesting, as it directly leads us into the main problems facing mutants today.
I'm not sure if you do torrents at all, but I did find this link, which is a torrent to get all the Ultimate Marvel series (complete), pre-reboot.
The Ultimate X-Men series is a good place for new readers to start, as there isn't nearly as much research to do on the different characters and all the things that came before to be done.
Either way, unless you can go all the way back to 1963 and start with the very first issue, there is going to be some major research.
Now....about this DC Universe...if it isn't Justice League, I'm pretty lost...any help? I've been told the characters are majorly slashy, but the little I've been able to come across didn't seem that way to me....and I'd love to know a LOT more about Superboy.
